this follows his recent appointment as Director General of the MSG Secretariat. Director General Louma, pending the necessary permits in Port Moresby, is not yet in Vanuatu and is on a series of courtesy visits to PNG Leaders and briefings with relevant Government Departments and Agencies.

one of the most important and pressing issues discussed this morning was the need for an urgent formal transfer of the MSG Chair from PNG to Vanuatu, a position that rotates every two years among the members. .Covid-19, by default, caused this transfer of Chairperson to be delayed for nearly four years.

he has asked PNG Government Officials to work with their Vanuatu Government counterparts to find out how this can be done. In addition, Prime Minister Hon.

marape has asked the Director General that the Secretariat hold a virtual meeting with other MSG leaders during the handover ceremony, to enable them to witness the event.

Following DG Louma’s briefing on the dire financial situation at the MSG Secretariat, PM Hon. marape provided assurances that PNG would settle all outstanding contributions as well as pay assessed contributions by 2022. He stated that this would allow the new Director General to start cleanly with respect to PNG’s assessed contributions.

other issues discussed included the possibility of reviewing the recruitment process for the Director General and to explore options for a rotation process among members, while maintaining a merit-based appointment system. PM Your Honor. .marape is pleased to hear that the Secretariat is working on a Draft Discussion Paper for circulation to members and the Sub-Committee on Legal and Institutional Matters for consideration.

Human rights issues reported in West Papua and how to deal with them with Indonesia were also discussed at length at today’s meeting. The emphasis is on maintaining a credible ongoing dialogue with Indonesia on this issue.
