PASIFIK, THETPN-PBNEWS.COM — Benny Wenda, leader of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) reminded Pacific leaders to recall the resolution of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) which emphasized that Indonesia would allow the visit of the United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights. to West Papua.

This was conveyed by Benny Wenda, who is the Interim President of the Provisional Government of West Papua and the Chair of the ULMWP ahead of the PIF meeting in Fiji next week.

“I would like to remind Pacific leaders that during the discussion they need to recall the resolution for the visit of the UN High Commissioner to West Papua,” Wenda said as quoted by the Vanuatu Daily Post.

Previously, it was reported by the Guardian that Pacific leaders at the PIF meeting had pushed for Indonesia to complete the visit of the UN High Commissioner to investigate human rights violations reported to have occurred in Papua. So that the commissioners can provide evidence-based reports and information before the next PIF meeting.

Wenda said: “Melanesian and Pacific leaders need to deliver a stronger message from this meeting, as they have made calls for a visit by the UN high commissioner for human rights to West Papua.”

“The situation is getting worse. I pray that Pacific leaders continue to make their call and speak out for West Papua.”

He said, in West Papua, there have been and continue to experience ongoing conflicts for many years, so it is important that PIF highlights this issue.

The 51st PIF meeting itself is scheduled to be held in Suva, the capital of Fiji, from 11 to 14 July 2022 – almost a week.

Earlier in 2019, the Pacific leaders’ meeting within the PIF was held in Tuvalu.

Wenda then thanked the SHEFA Provincial Government Council (SPGC) and the Government of Vanuatu for recognizing West Papua and its struggle for self-determination and liberation from Indonesian rule.

Last year, the SPGC itself had carried out a traditional acceptance ceremony or adopted West Papua as its brother.

Yesterday, Benny Wenda had arrived in Port Vila from London, where he resides.
